If you are going to take photos of the night sky and not looking to go wide angled, you will need some specialised gear. I use the below and I haven’t been able to use them consistently due to the weather here in Scotland. Results are a bit hit and miss so every day is a school day.

Ioptron Skyguider Pro

This is a great well built device that tracks the rotation of the earth and makes the star appear static in the frame. The key to doing this is the polar alignment which is were I’ve been failing with this. I don’t think the mount is particularly well made and it can drop out a couple of degrees when tightening up. So i had to buy a mount from William Optics (see the Accessories page for more info) and results have been a lot better. Just need some clear skies now.

**** - Polar alignment can be a bit of a faff but a pretty solid device.

MSM Rotator

Another tracker which is so small and light I could fit it in a pocket. I haven’t tried it on the sky as yet but will be taking it with me to Skye again shortly and will hopefully have the opportunity to use it. The good thing about this tracker is it can be used as a timelapse rotator too, so this will definitely be an addition to my day pack
